Q: What is Constitution Day?

In 2004, Congress created Constitution Day, requiring all schools that receive federal funding to observe Constitution Day by teaching a curriculum on the U.S. Constitution on September 17th. Many public schools are unaware of this federal requirement to observe Constitution Day and there are few resources available to help teachers develop requisite lesson plans.

The ACLU has created this program because it is one of the nation's leading experts on the Constitution and is second only to the Department of Justice for the number of arguments made before the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition to defending the Constitution, the ACLU undertakes education efforts to make the public aware of important civil liberty issues and teaches people about their individual rights and how they can safeguard those rights.
