Q: What is Constitution Day?
A:

In 2004, Congress created Constitution Day, requiring all schools that receive federal funding to observe Constitution Day by teaching a curriculum on the U.S. Constitution on September 17th. Many public schools are unaware of this federal requirement to observe Constitution Day and there are few resources available to help teachers develop requisite lesson plans.

Q: What is the ACLU?
A:

For more than 93 years, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been the nation's guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and civil liberties that the Constitution, Bill of Rights and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. The ACLU is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization whose mission is to defend and preserve the freedoms guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution. That means that the ACLU works to defend the civil liberties and individual rights of everyone, regardless of their political affiliation or popularity. Q: Why has the ACLU developed the "Constitution Day Brought To You By The ACLU" program?
A:

The ACLU has created this program because it is one of the nation's leading experts on the Constitution and is second only to the Department of Justice for the number of arguments made before the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition to defending the Constitution, the ACLU undertakes education efforts to make the public aware of important civil liberty issues and teaches people about their individual rights and how they can safeguard those rights.
